Mapping Montenegro’s energy transition, first-hand
PET attended the Just Transition Forum 2026 in Podgorica, organised by the Energy Community Secretariat with GIZ, under the Regional Climate Partnership between Germany and the Western Balkans.
Our co-founders Tanja Popovicki and Bojan Gajić are joined by Srđan Janković, who leads PET Montenegro. We came with a clear purpose: to map new opportunities for the energy transition in Montenegro as the country moves closer to EU membership.
From the future of the Pljevlja coal region to energy poverty tools and Just Transition financing, the agenda covers exactly the questions that will shape the next phase of Montenegro’s energy sector.
There is a second reason we are here. Our project Beli Breg has been selected for the Women in Energy photo exhibition, which was openad at the Forum . The exhibition presents sixteen photographs of women working in energy across nine countries of the Energy Community region, as engineers, dispatchers, auditors and community organisers. We are glad that our work is part of making that contribution visible.
The Forum confirmed what we expected: Montenegro’s energy transition is entering a phase where planning turns into implementation, and that is where local knowledge and practical partnerships matter most. The conversations and contacts from Podgorica will feed directly into PET Montenegro’s work in the coming months.
